Debra Quartararo’s paintings are inspired by her connection to the land that surrounds her. The small moments watching changing cloud structures, the momentum of the ocean waves, the movement of light over mountains, and the texture of foliage demonstrates her underlying love of the landscape.
Her paintings have an ethereal element to them and she is drawn to atmospheric tonal representations. Her desire is to paint the way the landscape feels rather than just how it appears. Travelling between Tasmania and the NSW south coast she watches the changing colour palette of the landscape and the way it influences the people who live within it. These memories are incorporated in her work.
“To me the landscape is a living entity that has a life of its own and engages with us on a spiritual level. I am attracted to the play of light and the way the colours and shapes form and change throughout the day. I aim to take the viewer to a moment in time, to capture the essence of light and atmosphere and show the beauty and emotion hidden in plain sight of the world we find ourselves living in. Each work ultimately takes us to that place of new beginnings, the new dawn, the new day, a way forward and a rebirth. Its about letting go of the past and the future and acknowledging that single moment of perfection between them both”
Debra is a member of the Jervis Bay and Shoalhaven plein air groups and the Millhouse and Shoalhaven Art Societies.
