The natural world and ever changing environment inspire Catherine Woods to create artworks which she hopes inspire people to take an active interest in, and develop a connection with their local environment.

Catherine makes both larger and smaller scale art in the outdoors and in her home studio. Exploring with/in a variety of mediums, such as charcoal, pastel, oil and watercolours, allows for creativity and flexibility in her art practice. For example watercolour is her choice of medium for her delicate whale paintings. Catherine also experiments in collage, with or without other mediums.

Belonging to a weekly plein air group (outdoor painting), allows Catherine to enjoy using various techniques, mood and colour choices usually in watercolour or acrylic, to depict scenery of the Shoalhaven region.

Native fauna, especially birds and ocean creatures, is a favourite focus of Catherine’s and she loves taking her time completing oil paintings of colourful birds in her home studio.

“I love the outdoor lifestyle offered in Jervis Bay. Growing up on the edge of the wondrous Bass Strait in Tasmania, as kids, we were fortunate to be able to roam the bush and beach. As an adult now in JB I feel we are fortunate to be able to participate in a vast range of similar activities on and around JB. In fact, just purely reflecting and enjoying the expansive view is wonderfully vitalizing, and a special treat is to catch sight of a breeching whale in the bay. Through these experiences, my aim is to reflect the surrounding, mostly natural environment using various mediums, colours and techniques, ultimately creating artworks which connect with people.”
